Food and nightlife

Vancouver is defined by its ingredients. You come here for the freshest sushi outside of Japan and high-end Chinese cuisine in Richmond. The nightlife is subdued; the city goes to bed early to hike at dawn. Head to Gastown for cocktail bars in historic brick buildings or Main Street for a dense concentration of craft breweries. In contrast, Toronto is a sensory overload. You can find authentic Ethiopian, Tibetan, or Portuguese food within a few blocks of each other. The nightlife is the best in Canada. King West is the spot for upscale lounges and bottle service, while Queen West and Ossington offer dive bars, live music venues, and rooftop patios that stay packed until 2:00 AM.

Budget and prices

Both cities are expensive by Canadian standards. In Vancouver, expect to pay $250–$400 for a central hotel. A casual meal for two is roughly $60, while a daily budget should hover around $200 per person excluding lodging. Toronto is slightly more expensive for entertainment but comparable for food. Hotel prices in the Financial District often exceed $350. A mid-range dinner for two with drinks will cost $100. Public transit is affordable in both, with day passes under $15. If you are on a strict budget, Toronto offers more free street festivals, whereas Vancouver offers free access to mountains and beaches.

When to visit

Visit Vancouver from July to September for guaranteed sun and dry weather. The rest of the year is notorious for persistent drizzle. Visit Toronto in May/June or September/October to avoid the humid 30°C+ summer heat and the brutal sub-zero winters. If you have to choose one month, September is the winner. Vancouver is still warm enough for the ocean, and Toronto’s humidity breaks, making it the perfect time for the Toronto International Film Festival.

Which is better for first-time visitors?

Vancouver is the better choice for a first-time visitor to Canada. While Toronto is a powerful economic engine, it feels like an exceptionally clean version of New York or London. It doesn't offer a "unique" geography. Vancouver, however, is visually arresting in a way few cities are. The juxtaposition of glass skyscrapers against snow-capped peaks and the dark green of the rainforest is a specific Canadian aesthetic you cannot find elsewhere. It is easier to navigate as a tourist, the air is cleaner, and the connection to the outdoors is immediate. If you want to see Canada's natural beauty without leaving the comfort of a luxury hotel, Vancouver delivers exactly that balance.

Can you do both in one trip?

Only if you fly. Vancouver and Toronto are 3,400 kilometers apart. Driving takes 40 hours of pure road time through the prairies. A flight takes 5 hours and 30 minutes, with a 3-hour time zone difference. If you have 10–12 days, a "Coast to City" split works well. Spend 5 days in Vancouver (including a day trip to Whistler), then fly to Toronto for 4 days (including a day trip to Niagara Falls).
