Best Time to Visit Queenstown

The best time to visit Queenstown is March. This month hits the sweet spot between the hectic summer peak and the early winter chill. You get stable temperatures ranging from 11°C to 20°C, perfect for hiking and bungee jumping without the mid-summer heat. The massive school holiday crowds of January and February have cleared out, which means lower accommodation rates and shorter queues at Fergburger. The autumn colors begin to turn the hills gold late in the month, and the wind dies down, making it the ideal window for lake activities and photography.

Month by month

January

Expect highs of 22°C and lows of 10°C. This is the peak of summer and the busiest month of the year. Trails are crowded and you must book accommodation months in advance. Prices are at their highest. It is the best time for canyoning or multi-day treks like the Routeburn Track. The days are long, with sunset often occurring after 9:30 PM, giving you maximum time for outdoor adventure.

February

Temperatures remain warm, ranging from 10°C to 22°C. While international tourists are still everywhere, New Zealand schools return, slightly easing the local family crowds. Water temperatures in Lake Wakatipu are at their warmest, though still brisk. Use this month for jet boating or hanging out at the waterfront bars. Prices remain high, but availability starts to open up toward the end of the month.

March

The weather cools slightly to a comfortable 8°C to 19°C range. March offers the most stable weather of the year with the least rainfall. Prices drop from the summer peak. It is the best time for the Motatapu Off-Road Sporting Festival, which sees thousands of mountain bikers and runners tackle the backcountry trails between Wanaka and Arrowtown. This is the professional’s choice for hiking.

April

Autumn arrives with crisp air and temperatures between 5°C and 15°C. The hillsides turn vibrant shades of orange and red. This is a shoulder season, so expect moderate prices and fewer crowds. The Arrowtown Autumn Festival is the highlight, celebrating the region's gold mining history amidst the changing leaves. It’s perfect for visiting Central Otago wineries as the harvest season begins.

May

Temperatures drop significantly, ranging from 2°C to 12°C. This is the quietest month in Queenstown. Walking trails can be muddy, and it is too early for skiing. many operators use this time for maintenance. However, this is when you will find the absolute lowest prices on luxury lodges and hotel rooms. It’s a great month for "slow travel" and cozying up by a fireplace with local Pinot Noir.

June

Winter begins, with temperatures between 0°C and 8°C. The ski fields (Coronet Peak and The Remarkables) usually open mid-to-late month. While early season snow can be hit or miss, the energy in town picks up as the seasonal workers arrive. The Queenstown Winter Festival often takes place in late June, featuring live music, fireworks onto the lake, and comedy shows to kick off the season.

July

Expect cold days from -2°C to 7°C. This is peak ski season, coinciding with school holidays in Australia and New Zealand. The town is packed, and prices for accommodation and car rentals spike. If you aren't here to ski or snowboard, avoid this month. Night skiing at Coronet Peak is a major draw, offering the chance to hit the slopes under floodlights with DJs playing at the base building.

August

Temperatures stay low, ranging from -1°C to 8°C. The snow base on the mountains is typically at its deepest and most reliable during August. It remains busy but lacks the chaotic energy of the July school holidays. This is the best month for heli-skiing in the Southern Alps. Mid-week stays offer slightly better value, but expect to pay premium winter rates across the board.

September

Spring starts to show, but it’s still cold, between 2°C and 12°C. This is "spring skiing" season—mornings are icy and afternoons are slushy. Prices begin to dip as the hardcore skiers head home. Snowboarders love the Snow Machine festival, a multi-day event combining mountain-top stages and aprés-ski parties in town. It is the last chance for snow activities before the spring thaw gets serious.

October

Temperatures rise to a range of 4°C to 15°C. The snow melts, causing river levels to rise, which makes this an excellent month for white-water rafting on the Shotover River. It is a shoulder season with unpredictable weather—you might get a snow dump one day and T-shirt weather the next. Crowds are thin, and you can often find "shoulder season" deals at major hotel chains.

November

Expect mild temperatures between 6°C and 18°C. This is the best month for gardeners and photographers, as the lupins (purple wildflowers) begin to bloom across the Mackenzie Basin and around Queenstown. The town is relatively quiet before the December rush. It’s a prime time for the Queenstown Marathon, which takes runners on a scenic course through Arrowtown, Lake Hayes, and the Frankton track.

December

The start of summer brings temperatures of 9°C to 20°C. The first half of the month is relatively quiet and reasonably priced, but everything changes after December 20. Christmas and New Year’s Eve see the town reach maximum capacity. The New Year’s Eve fireworks display over Lake Wakatipu is a major event, drawing thousands of partygoers to the lakefront for live music and celebrations.

Cheapest time to visit Queenstown

If you are on a budget, visit Queenstown in May or October. These are the "dead" zones between the primary summer and winter seasons.

  • Accommodation: Hotels often run "3 nights for the price of 2" deals. Expect to pay 30-40% less than you would in January or July.
  • Flights: Air New Zealand and Jetstar frequently run domestic sales during these periods.
  • Activities: While permanent attractions like the Skyline Gondola don't drop prices, you will find more availability for "early bird" discounts on jet boats and bungy jumps.

Avoid the school holiday windows in late April and early October if you want to keep costs down.

When to avoid Queenstown

Avoid Queenstown during the July school holidays (usually the first two weeks of the month) unless you are there specifically to ski.

The town's infrastructure struggles under the weight of thousands of families. Traffic into the CBD from Frankton can take an hour for a 7km trip. Restaurants are fully booked weeks in advance, and the ski fields are plagued by long lift lines.

Similarly, the week between Christmas and New Year’s Eve is chaotic. If you dislike loud crowds and high prices, stay away during the last two weeks of December.

Best time for good weather

For consistent, clear, and warm weather, visit in January or February.

New Zealand weather is notoriously fickle, but mid-summer offers the most reliability. You’ll experience the "Long Daylight" phenomenon where it remains light until late evening. This is essential if you plan on doing long-distance hiking or driving the road to Milford Sound, which can be hazardous in the rain or snow.

If you prefer cool, crisp weather without the humidity of summer, March and April offer the most blue-bird days with very little wind, which is ideal for paragliding or skydiving.

Best time for fewer crowds

To have the trails and viewpoints to yourself, aim for May or November.

May is the transition into winter. The town is peaceful, and you won't have to fight for a seat at a bar. November is the transition into summer. Most of the winter crowd has long departed, and the summer travelers haven't arrived yet.

During these months, you can enjoy the Great Walks (like the Routeburn or Kepler) without the heavy foot traffic found in mid-summer. It is also the best time for spontaneous travelers; you can usually book tours and dinners on the same day rather than planning months in advance.
