Penang is Malaysia’s heavy hitter for food, street art, and heritage. You aren't here for a relaxing resort stay; you’re here to eat until you can’t walk and navigate the labyrinthine alleys of George Town. This 3 day Penang itinerary maximizes your time by grouping spots by neighborhood. You will prioritize three critical locations: the intricate Khoo Kongsi clan temple, the panoramic views from Penang Hill, and the sprawling Kek Lok Si Temple. We focus on the UNESCO World Heritage zone for the first 48 hours, then head to the hills and coastline to round out the trip.

Day 1: George Town Heritage and Street Art

Morning

Start in the core of the UNESCO zone. Walk to the Street Art by Ernest Zacharevic. Most tourists queue for the "Kids on a Bicycle" mural on Lebuh Armenian, so get there by 8:30 AM to beat the heat and the crowds. From there, walk five minutes to Khoo Kongsi. This is the most ornate Chinese clan house in Malaysia. Entry is RM 10. The stone carvings and gold-leaf pillars are unmatched. Finish your morning at the Chew Jetty, one of the last remaining wooden stilt house settlements. It’s narrow and gets packed, so stay focused and grab a cold fruit juice from a vendor at the end of the pier.

Afternoon

Escape the afternoon humidity at the Blue Mansion (Cheong Fatt Tze). You must book a guided tour (usually 11:00 AM or 2:00 PM) to see the interior. The architecture is a masterclass in Feng Shui and 19th-century luxury. Afterward, walk toward the Pinang Peranakan Mansion. This green-hued estate houses over 1,000 Straits Chinese antiques. It offers the best insight into the lives of the wealthy Baba-Nyonya merchants. Everything in the afternoon is walkable, but keep a Grab app ready if the 34-degree heat becomes overwhelming.

Evening

Head to Chulia Street and Lebuh Kimberley. These streets transform into outdoor food courts after sundown. Your goals are Mother’s Sky Wan Tan Mee on Lebuh Kimberley and the curry mee stalls nearby. Avoid the sit-down restaurants for now; the best food is served on plastic plates at the curbside. End your night at Love Lane. It’s the hub for bars and live music. If you want a quieter drink, look for The Narrow Marrow or hidden speakeasies tucked into unmarked heritage shophouses.

Day 2: Temples and Tropical Views

Morning

Take a 20-minute Grab ride to Kek Lok Si Temple in Air Itam. Start early—the gates open at 8:30 AM. This is the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia. Don't just stay at the bottom; take the inclined lift to the 30-meter bronze statue of Kuan Yin. After the temple, walk down the hill to the Air Itam Market. You are here for one specific dish: Air Itam Asam Laksa. It is situated right next to the wet market and is widely considered the gold standard for Penang’s signature spicy-sour fish noodle soup.

Afternoon

Walk from the market to the Penang Hill Lower Station. Avoid the weekend crowds if possible. Buy a "Fast Lane" ticket if the queue exceeds 60 minutes. The funicular takes you 833 meters above sea level. Once at the peak, head straight to The Habitat. This is a world-class rainforest discovery center. Walk the Langur Way Canopy Walk and the Curtis Crest Tree Top Walk for 360-degree views of the island and the mainland. It’s significantly cooler up here, providing a much-needed break from the city's humidity.

Evening

Descend the hill and head to New Lane (Lorong Baru) Hawker Centre. It’s one of the most efficient places to knock out multiple dishes from your 3 day Penang itinerary checklist. Look for the Charcoal Char Kway Teow stall and the grilled stingray (Ikan Bakar). If you have energy left, take a Grab to Hin Bus Depot. This former bus terminal was converted into an arts space. It’s surrounded by craft beer bars and small galleries, offering a modern contrast to the historical focus of day one.

Day 3: Coastal Views and The Northern Shore

Morning

Head north toward Batu Ferringhi. Your first stop is the Tropical Spice Garden. Take the guided tour to learn about the spice trade that made Penang a colonial prize. The garden is lush and features a giant swing overlooking the jungle. Next, continue ten minutes further to Teluk Bahang to visit Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm. It’s more than just a butterfly enclosure; it’s a massive indoor invertebrate conservatory that is arguably the best managed nature attraction on the island.

Afternoon

Stay in the north for lunch at a local Malay seafood shack along the coast, or head to the Batu Ferringhi beach for a quick walk. Note: the water here isn't the crystal-clear turquoise you find in Langkawi; it's better for views than swimming. If you prefer hiking, visit the Penang National Park. You can hike the trail to Monkey Beach or Turtle Beach. It’s about 1.5 to 2 hours each way, so bring plenty of water. If you aren't a hiker, you can hire a boat at the park entrance to drop you at the beaches and pick you up later.

Evening

For your final night, return toward George Town but stop at Gurney Drive. While the famous Gurney Drive Hawker Centre is touristy, the nearby Gurney Paragon and Gurney Plaza areas offer high-end dining if you've had enough of street food. For a more authentic North Indian meal, head back into town to Little India. The area around Lebuh Pasar is alive at night with loud music and the smell of jasmine and spices. Order a set meal at Sri Ananda Bahwan and finish with a pulled Teh Tarik.

Where to stay for this itinerary

Stay in George Town, specifically near Lebuh Chulia or Muntri Street. This keeps you within walking distance of 70% of this itinerary. Boutique heritage hotels like The Blue Mansion or Seven Terraces offer the best experience. If you prefer modern amenities and high-rises, look for hotels in the Gurney Drive area, which provides a middle ground between the city and the northern beaches.

Add a day if you have time

If you have a fourth day, cross the bridge to the Mainland (Seberang Perai). Visit the Frog Hill abandoned quarry for dramatic turquoise pools that look like something from Zhangjiajie. Alternatively, spend the day in Balik Pulau on the southwest side of the island. It’s the "rural" Penang, filled with nutmeg orchards, goat farms, and paddy fields. It is the best place to try fresh Durian during the May-August season.
