The best time to visit Mykonos is September. You get the ideal balance: the Aegean Sea is at its warmest, the aggressive summer Meltemi winds have died down, and the crushing July crowds have departed. Prices for luxury villas and boutique hotels start to dip, yet every beach club and restaurant remains fully operational. The weather is consistently sunny with highs around 27°C (80°F). If you want the full Mykonos experience without the peak-season friction, book your trip for the first three weeks of September.

Mykonos month by month

January in Mykonos

January is the quietest month on the island. Expect temperatures between 9°C and 14°C (48°F–57°F). It is often windy and rainy. Most hotels, beach clubs, and high-end restaurants are closed for the season. You will see the local side of the island. The main event is Epiphany on January 6th, where locals gather in the Old Port for the blessing of the waters and a traditional cross-diving ceremony. Prices are at their absolute lowest.

February in Mykonos

February remains cold and damp, with temperatures averaging 10°C to 15°C (50°F–59°F). It is not swimming weather. This is the time for hikers and photographers who want empty streets in Chora. If the timing aligns, you can experience the Mykonian Carnival (Apokries) late in the month. Locals dress in costumes and host feasts in the villages. While most tourist infrastructure is dormant, a few local tavernas in Ano Mera stay open.

March in Mykonos

Spring begins in March. Temperatures rise slightly to a range of 11°C to 16°C (52°F–61°F). The landscape turns surprisingly green, and wildflowers bloom across the hills. It is still too cold for the beach, but perfect for walking the cobblestone paths of Mykonos Town. Greek Independence Day on March 25th is the highlight, featuring parades and traditional cod dishes. Many hotels begin light renovations this month in preparation for the season.

April in Mykonos

April brings more sun and temperatures between 13°C and 19°C (55°F–66°F). This is a transitional month. Orthodox Easter often falls in April, which is the most significant cultural event in Greece. You will see candlelit processions and spit-roast lamb in the squares. While the water is still a chilling 16°C, the island starts to wake up. Seasonal flights begin to increase, and some boutique hotels open their doors for the holiday.

May in Mykonos

May is the best time to visit Mykonos for hikers and sightseers. Temperatures are comfortable, ranging from 16°C to 23°C (61°F–73°F). You can sunbathe comfortably, even if the sea is still brisk. Prices are mid-range—higher than winter but significantly lower than summer. Most beach clubs at Psarou and Paraga open by mid-May. It is the ideal window to visit the nearby sacred island of Delos without the scorching summer heat.

June in Mykonos

June marks the start of high season. Temperatures climb to 20°C–27°C (68°F–80°F). The nightlife scene is in full swing, but the island hasn't reached its maximum capacity yet. The Meltemi winds—strong northern gusts—begin to pick up, providing a cooling breeze. June is perfect for those who want the famous Mykonos party atmosphere with slightly more breathing room on the dance floor. The water is finally warm enough for extended swimming.

July in Mykonos

July is peak summer. Expect temperatures between 23°C and 29°C (73°F–84°F), though it can feel hotter in the sun. The island is packed. Traffic in and out of Chora becomes a factor. Expect high "summer tax" pricing at hotels and restaurants. This is the month for the world’s most famous DJs. The party is 24/7. Secure your sunbed reservations weeks in advance, especially at places like Nammos or Scorpios.

August in Mykonos

August is the busiest and most expensive month. Temperatures average 24°C to 30°C (75°F–86°F). The Meltemi winds are at their strongest, which can make some northern beaches too choppy for swimming. The island is at 100% capacity due to the Ferragosto holidays and the Greek summer break. If you enjoy people-watching and high-energy beach parties, this is your month. Expect long waits for taxis and premium pricing everywhere.

September in Mykonos

September is the "insider" favorite. Temperatures remain warm, between 21°C and 27°C (70°F–81°F), and the sea is at its peak temperature after absorbing the summer sun. The winds die down, making boat trips to Rhenia more enjoyable. The Harvest Festival takes place at the Agricultural Museum in mid-September, offering a taste of local wine and food. You get the luxury experience with 20% fewer people than in August.

October in Mykonos

October is the start of the "shoulder-off" season. Temperatures hover between 17°C and 22°C (63°F–72°F). The first two weeks are usually pleasant and sunny, but the chances of rain increase toward the end of the month. Many beach clubs host closing parties in early October. Prices drop significantly. It is a great time for a budget-friendly luxury stay, provided you don't mind a quieter nightlife scene.

November in Mykonos

November marks the end of the tourist season. Temperatures drop to 14°C–18°C (57°F–64°F). Most direct international flights stop, requiring a connection through Athens. The island enters a period of rest. Most shops in the Matogianni district close their shutters. This is a time for solitude and connecting with the locals. Feast days for various saints are celebrated in small chapels across the island with traditional "panigiria" (festivals).

December in Mykonos

December is cool and quiet, with temperatures between 11°C and 15°C (52°F–59°F). It is one of the wettest months. Mykonos Town is decorated for Christmas, but it is a far cry from the cosmopolitan hub it is in the summer. Boats still run to and from Piraeus, but the schedule is reduced. Visit in December if you want to see the stark, rugged beauty of the Cyclades without a single tourist in sight.

Cheapest time to visit Mykonos

To save the most money, visit Mykonos in the low season: November through March. During these months, hotel rates can be 70% lower than in July. However, keep in mind that many amenities will be closed.

If you want the "real" Mykonos experience (beach clubs and restaurants) on a budget, aim for the "shoulder season" windows: late April to early May or mid-October. During these weeks, you can find luxury accommodations for roughly half the peak season price. Dining and transport costs remain relatively static, but your biggest overhead—lodging—will be significantly cheaper. Avoid the weeks surrounding Greek Easter if you are looking for the absolute lowest spring prices.

When to avoid Mykonos

Avoid Mykonos in August if you dislike crowds, wind, or inflated prices. This is the month when the island is the most congested. The "Meltemi" winds are at their peak, which can mean cancelled ferries and sand-blasted beaches on the northern coast.

If your goal is a beach holiday, avoid December through March. The weather is too cold for swimming, and the island feels like a ghost town. Many visitors find the closure of 80% of businesses depressing during the winter. Similarly, avoid the peak of the summer if you are looking for a quiet, romantic getaway; the noise levels in Chora and near the main beaches are high until 5:00 AM daily.

Best time for good weather

For the best weather, book between June and September.

  • For Heat: July and August offer the hottest temperatures, peaked for those who want to spend all day in the water.
  • For Swimming: September has the warmest sea temperatures (around 24°C / 75°F).
  • For Hiking/Exploring: May and October offer mild temperatures (around 20°C / 68°F) that allow you to walk the island without the risk of heatstroke.

If you want clear blue skies with the least amount of wind, early September is your best bet. The aggressive summer winds usually settle, providing calm seas and perfect conditions for yachting.

Best time for fewer crowds

The best time for fewer crowds while businesses are still open is May or October.

In May, the island is waking up. The staff at restaurants are fresh, and the beaches are pristine. You won’t need reservations for the top-tier restaurants. In October, the crowd thins out significantly after the first week. You can walk through the narrow streets of Little Venice without shoulder-to-shoulder traffic.

If your priority is absolute solitude and you don't care about nightlife or swimming, January and February are the only times you will truly have the island to yourself. During these months, the only people you will encounter are the 10,000 permanent residents.
