Best Time to Visit Hiroshima
The best time to visit Hiroshima is October. You get clear skies, crisp air, and stable temperatures averaging 18°C (64°F). It is the sweet spot between the humid typhoon season of September and the winter chill of November. Fall foliage begins to turn on Miyajima Island late in the month, and crowds are manageable compared to the spring cherry blossom rush. October provides the most reliable weather for walking the Peace Memorial Park and hiking Mount Misen without the sweat or the rain gear.
Hiroshima Month by Month
January
January is cold and dry. Expect temperatures between 2°C (36°F) and 9°C (48°F). It is one of the quietest months for tourism. Rates for high-end hotels near Hiroshima Station drop significantly. You will need a heavy coat, but the sky is often blue and clear. Visit the Gokoku Shrine for Hatsumode (the first shrine visit of the year) to see locals in traditional dress.
February
Conditions remain cold, often hovering around 3°C to 10°C (37°F–50°F). Rain is infrequent, but light snow happens occasionally. February is the peak of oyster season. Head to the Hiroshima Oyster Festival at the beginning of the month. You can eat fresh grilled oysters at temporary shacks along the pier near Ninoshima or at the city’s many okonomiyaki shops.
March
Temperatures rise to an average high of 14°C (57°F). Early March is still chilly, but by the end of the month, the city wakes up. This is the start of peak season. Plums bloom first, followed by the highly anticipated cherry blossoms (sakura) in the final week. Prices begin to climb as domestic travelers arrive for spring break.
April
April is the most popular time to visit. Temperatures are ideal, ranging from 10°C to 19°C (50°F–66°F). The Peace Memorial Park is covered in pink blossoms. Expect heavy crowds and peak hotel pricing. Book your Shinkansen tickets and accommodation at least three months in advance. The atmosphere is celebratory, with frequent hanami (flower viewing) parties along the Motoyasu River.
May
May offers excellent weather before the rainy season starts. Temperatures sit between 15°C and 24°C (59°F–75°F). The Flower Festival takes place during Golden Week (early May), attracting over a million visitors. Avoid this specific week if you dislike crowds. The rest of the month is perfect for an afternoon ferry trip to Miyajima Island.
June
June marks the start of Tsuyu, the rainy season. It is humid and wet, with temperatures between 19°C and 27°C (66°F–81°F). Carry a sturdy umbrella. The upside is the blooming hydrangeas and significantly lower foot traffic at major sites. Visit the Shukkeien Garden to see the traditional rice-planting festival, Otaue, which takes place in mid-June.
July
July is hot and very humid. Highs regularly hit 31°C (88°F). Walking through the city feels like a workout. This is the start of the summer festival season. The Enonmichi (Gion) Festival features traditional music and stalls. Use the city’s air-conditioned streetcars (Hiroden) to move between sites to avoid heat exhaustion.
August
August is the most significant month for the city. Temperatures peak at 33°C (91°F) with high humidity. On August 6, the city holds the Peace Memorial Ceremony. In the evening, thousands of paper lanterns are floated down the river. It is a somber, moving entry in the city’s calendar. Expect heavy crowds and high humidity.
September
September brings the risk of typhoons. The weather is still hot, averaging 20°C to 29°C (68°F–84°F). Rain comes in short, heavy bursts. If a typhoon warning is issued, trains and ferries will stop running. However, when the sun is out, the parks are lush and green. It is a shoulder month with fluctuating hotel prices.
October
October is the best time to visit Hiroshima. The humidity vanishes. Temperatures range from 14°C to 23°C (57°F–73°F). It is the best month for outdoor activities. Attend the Saijo Sake Festival in early October. Located just outside the city, this festival allows you to sample sake from dozens of local breweries in a lively atmosphere.
November
Autumn colors peak in November. Temperatures drop to a cool 8°C to 16°C (46°F–61°F). Miyajima’s Momijidani Park turns vibrant shades of red and orange. This is a busy period for photographers. You will need layers for the evening, but the daytime sun is pleasant. Prices are higher than in October due to the fall foliage tourism.
December
Winter returns with temperatures between 4°C and 11°C (39°F–52°F). The city is decorated with elaborate light displays, specifically the "Hiroshima Dreamination" along Peace Boulevard. Tourism slows down after the first week, making it a good time for budget travelers. Most major sites remain open, though some smaller shops close for the New Year holiday starting December 29.
Cheapest time to visit Hiroshima
To save money, visit Hiroshima in January or February. Outside of the New Year holiday, hotel rates are at their lowest for the year. Flight prices to nearby airports like Hiroshima (HIJ) or Fukuoka (FUK) drop as well.
Mid-June and early July are also affordable due to the rainy season. If you don't mind carrying an umbrella, you can find high-end accommodation for 30-40% less than April prices. Always avoid "Golden Week" (late April to early May) and "Obon" (mid-August) if budget is your priority, as prices for transport and lodging double during these national holidays.
When to avoid Hiroshima
Avoid the first week of May (Golden Week). The entire country travels during this time. Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park and Miyajima become extremely congested. Lines for the Miyajima ferry can take over an hour, and popular okonomiyaki restaurants will have long wait times.
Mid-August is another difficult time. The heat and humidity are at their physical limit, and the Obon holiday brings another wave of domestic travelers. Unless you are specifically attending the August 6 memorial, the combination of crushing heat and crowds makes sightseeing difficult.
Best time for good weather
For the most comfortable outdoor experience, book your trip for October or May.
October is superior because it avoids the spring pollen that bothers many travelers in Japan. The air is dry, the sky is deep blue, and you can walk the city without the sweat of summer or the biting wind of winter. May is a close second, offering vibrant greenery and warm days, though you must dodge the Golden Week crowd at the start of the month.
Best time for fewer crowds
Go in January or June.
In January, the cold keeps the casual tourists away. You will have the Atomic Bomb Dome and the Peace Memorial Museum largely to yourself. It is a quiet, contemplative time that suits the city's history.
June is the "hidden" quiet season. Most travelers avoid it because of the rain. However, the rain in Hiroshima is often intermittent. If you are willing to navigate a few wet days, you can experience Miyajima’s shrines without the typical tourist throngs. Mid-week visits in any month except April and November will also yield a much quieter experience than weekends.
