Three days in Dubrovnik is the ideal window to experience the Pearl of the Adriatic without rushing. This 3 day Dubrovnik itinerary focuses on maximizing your time between the limestone streets of the Old Town and the deep blue of the Dalmatian coast. You will prioritize the three essential landmarks: the medieval City Walls, the summit of Mount Srđ, and the car-free sanctuary of Lokrum Island. By following this schedule, you avoid the midday cruise ship crowds and hit the best swimming spots and historic sites when the lighting and temperature are optimal.

Day 1: The Old Town and the High Ground

The first day of your 3 day Dubrovnik itinerary is about orientation. Everything in the Old Town is accessible by foot, but prepare for steep stairs.

Morning

Start at Pile Gate, the main entrance to the city. Go immediately to the City Walls entrance. Buy your ticket early (or use the Dubrovnik Pass) to beat the heat. The 2-kilometer loop takes about 90 minutes. Walk counter-clockwise for the best views of the terracotta rooftops and the Minceta Tower. After descending, walk the Stradun, the main limestone thoroughfare. Stop at Onofrio's Fountain to refill your water bottle with fresh spring water—it is safe to drink and free.

Afternoon

Walk to the Rector’s Palace. This Gothic-Renaissance building served as the seat of the Republic’s government. It is cool inside, making it a perfect midday escape. Next, head to the Dubrovnik Cathedral to see the Treasury’s gold-plated relics. For lunch, grab a "dirty" calamari sandwich or a slice of local burek in the narrow alleyways behind the cathedral. Avoid the main square restaurants if you want better value.

Evening

Head behind the Church of St. Ignatius to find the Dubrovnik Cable Car station. Take the 4-minute ride to the top of Mount Srđ. You get a panoramic view of the entire Elafiti archipelago and the Old Town below. After watching the sunset, take the cable car back down and navigate to Buža Bar. This "hole-in-the-wall" bar is literally built into the cliffs outside the city walls. It is the best spot for a cold beer with a direct view of the horizon.

Day 2: Islands and Hidden Coves

Now that you have seen the city from above, spend your second day on the water.

Morning

Walk to the Old Town Port. Buy a ferry ticket for the 15-minute boat ride to Lokrum Island. Boats leave every half hour. Once there, head straight to the Dead Sea (Mrtvo More), a salt-filled lake linked to the ocean by underground caves. It is highly buoyant and surrounded by pine trees. Afterward, visit the Benedictine Monastery of St. Mary to see the botanical gardens and the original Iron Throne from the Game of Legends filming sets.

Afternoon

Take the ferry back to the mainland and walk 10 minutes east to Banje Beach. It is the most famous beach in the city. If you want a quieter experience, keep walking another 10 minutes to Sveti Jakov Beach. It requires descending a long set of stairs, but the view of the Old Town is superior and the crowds are thinner. Spend your afternoon swimming in the Adriatic. There is a small restaurant on the beach for a late lunch of grilled fish.

Evening

Return to the Old Town for a walk through the Gundulić Square Market area as it transitions into evening dining. For dinner, head to the Peskarija area near the port. Order the black risotto, a Dalmatian staple colored with cuttlefish ink. Finish the night with a walk to Porporela, the pier at the edge of the harbor. Local residents gather here at night to jump off the rocks or sit on the red lighthouse base. It is the quietest part of the city after dark.

Day 3: History and Coastal Heritage

The final day of your 3 day Dubrovnik itinerary balances specialized history with a view of the rugged coastline.

Morning

Start at Lovrijenac Fortress. This "Gibraltar of Dubrovnik" sits on a 37-meter high cliff outside the city walls. Your City Walls ticket from Day 1 likely includes entry here if used within the valid window. It offers the best perspective of the West Harbor. Afterward, visit the Franciscan Monastery. It houses one of the oldest functioning pharmacies in Europe, dating back to 1317. You can still buy face creams made from ancient Franciscan recipes.

Afternoon

Take a local bus (Line 4) or a 20-minute walk to Lapad Bay. This is where the locals go. The Uvala Lapad pedestrian promenade is lined with cafes and leads to several pebble beaches and concrete swimming platforms. Hike the coastal path around the Babin Kuk peninsula. It is a flat, easy trail that hugs the shoreline. Stop at Cave Bar More, a unique bar located inside a natural cavern beneath a hotel.

Evening

Return to the Old Town for a final meal. Look for Lady Pi-Pi near the upper walls for grilled meats (expect a line) or head to Lucin Kantun for innovative tapas-style Adriatic plates. End your trip with a scoop of gelato from Peppino's and a final stroll down the Stradun. If you have energy, several bars near the Revelin Fortress offer live music or DJ sets inside the old fortifications.

Where to stay for this itinerary

Stay within the Old Town if you want to be steps from the main sites, but be prepared for noise and stairs. For a quieter experience with better beach access, choose Lapad. It is connected to the Old Town by a 10-minute bus ride. Ploče is the best high-end option, offering hotels with direct views of the harbor and walls.

Add a day if you have time

If you have a fourth day, book a day trip to Montenegro or the Pelješac Peninsula. Montenegro's Bay of Kotor is a two-hour drive and offers dramatic fjord-like scenery. Alternatively, Pelješac is Croatia’s premier red wine region. You can visit world-class wineries like Miloš or Matuško and stop in the town of Ston to walk its medieval defensive walls and eat fresh oysters directly from the salt pans.
