5 Day Antalya Itinerary: The Ultimate Guide to Turkey’s Turquoise Coast

Antalya is the gateway to the Turkish Riviera. It is a city where Roman ruins sit next to luxury beach clubs and Taurus Mountain peaks overlook the Mediterranean. Five days is the ideal timeframe to see the city core, explore ancient Lycian sites, and head into the rural highlands.

This 5 day Antalya itinerary balances historical exploration with the high-end leisure the region is known for.

Day 1: Kaleiçi and the Roman Harbor

The first day focuses on the Old City, known as Kaleiçi. It is a maze of Ottoman-era mansions and Roman stone. Most of this area is pedestrian-only.

Morning: Hadrian’s Gate and the Old City

Start at Hadrian’s Gate. This triple-arched marble gateway was built in 130 AD to honor the Roman Emperor’s visit. Walk through it to enter Kaleiçi. Spend your morning wandering the narrow alleys. You will see carpets drying on stone walls and boutique hotels in restored tea-houses. Look for the Kesik Minare (Broken Minaret), a site that has been a Roman temple, a Byzantine church, and a mosque.

Afternoon: The Roman Harbor and Mermerli Beach

Head down the steep stone steps to the Roman Harbor. It is now a marina for wooden tour boats. For a quick swim without leaving the city center, go to Mermerli Beach. It is a small, private beach club tucked against the cliffside. You pay a small entry fee which usually includes a sunbed. The water is clear and surprisingly calm given its proximity to the port.

Evening: Sunset at Hıdırlık Tower

Walk to Karaalioglu Park at the edge of the Old City. The Hıdırlık Tower sits at the corner of the park overlooking the Gulf of Antalya. The sun sets directly over the Beydaglari Mountains across the water. After dark, stay in Kaleiçi for dinner; the area is dense with seafood restaurants and hidden courtyard bars serving Turkish wine.

Day 2: Archaeology and Coastal Waterfalls

Day two moves west of the city center to see the artifacts that put Antalya on the map and the natural landmarks that define the coast.

Morning: Antalya Archaeological Museum

Take the nostalgic tram from Kaleiçi to the Museum station. The Antalya Museum is one of the best in Turkey. It houses the "Hall of Gods" featuring massive, intact statues from the ancient city of Perge. Even if you aren't a history buff, the craftsmanship of the Roman sarcophagi here is worth the visit. It provides the context you need before visiting actual ruins later in the week.

Afternoon: Lower Düden Falls

Head to the Lara district to see the Lower Düden Falls. This is where the Düden River drops 40 meters off a cliff directly into the Mediterranean Sea. There is a public park built around the cliff edge with several viewing platforms. It is loud, misty, and one of the best photo ops in the city.

Evening: Lara Beach Club Scene

The Lara area is famous for its "themed" luxury resorts and high-end beach clubs. Spend the evening at one of the beach-front lounges. The vibe here is more modern and fast-paced than the Old City. It’s the best place to find international cuisine if you need a break from Turkish grills.

Day 3: Ancient Cities and Aspendos

On day three of your 5 day Antalya itinerary, you leave the city limits to explore the "Big Three" archaeological sites of the eastern plains.

Morning: Perge and Aspendos

Rent a car or hire a driver for the day. Start at Perge, just 15km from the city. Walk down the colonnaded street and check out the Roman baths. Next, drive further east to Aspendos. This site features the best-preserved Roman theater in the world. It was built in the 2nd century AD and still hosts operas and ballets today. The acoustics are perfect; stand in the center of the stage and whisper—someone at the top row will hear you.

Afternoon: Side’s Temple of Apollo

Continue east to the resort town of Side. The modern town is built directly on top of ancient ruins. Walk through the antique theater and the massive city walls. Follow the harbor path to the Temple of Apollo. The white marble columns stand right against the blue water.

Evening: Dinner in Side Harbor

Side is more tourist-centric than Antalya, but the sunset views at the harbor are hard to beat. Eat at one of the waterfront restaurants specializing in "Meze"—small plates of octopus, samphire, and roasted eggplant. Drive back to Antalya after dinner; the trip takes about 60 to 75 minutes.

Day 4: High Altitudes and Local Secrets

Day four takes you off the beaten path to see how the locals spend their weekends and to get a bird’s-eye view of the province.

Morning: Tünektepe Teleferik

Head west to the Tünektepe Cable Car. It’s a short, steep ride to the top of a 600-meter peak. From here, you can see the entire sprawl of Antalya, the massive commercial port, and the endless stretch of Konyaaltı Beach. It is significantly cooler at the top, making it a great escape if you are visiting in the peak of summer.

Afternoon: Çakırlar Village for Turkish Breakfast

Drive 20 minutes inland to Çakırlar. This village is famous for "Köy Kahvaltısı" (Village Breakfast). While most tourists eat breakfast at their hotels, locals come here. Expect dozens of small plates: hand-rolled Gözleme (savory crepes), local honey, tahini, and wood-fired bread. It is a slow, multi-hour meal served in outdoor garden seating.

Evening: Konyaaltı Beach Park

Spend your final evening in the city at Konyaaltı. Unlike the sandy Lara beach, this is a pebble beach with crystal clear water. The "Beach Park" area is a long promenade filled with cafes, skate parks, and locals walking their dogs. It has a relaxed, Pacific Northwest-meets-Mediterranean energy. Grab a beer or a tea and watch the lights of the city flicker on against the mountain backdrop.

Day 5: The Lycian Coast or Taurus Mountains

For the final day of your 5 day Antalya itinerary, choose between the turquoise waters of the west or the rugged canyons of the north.

Option A: Phaselis and Çıralı (Coastal)

Drive 45 minutes south to Phaselis. This was an ancient Lycian port city. The ruins are located inside a national park and are shaded by pine trees. Most notably, the ruins sit on three different crescent-shaped bays. You can swim amongst fallen Roman columns. Afterward, continue to Çıralı to see the "Eternal Flames" of the Chimaera—natural gas vents that have been burning out of the mountainside for millennia.

Option B: Köprülü Canyon (Adventure)

If you prefer mountains to ruins, head north to Köprülü Canyon National Park. This is the center for whitewater rafting in Turkey. The water is ice-cold even in July. You can spend the morning rafting down the river and the afternoon hiking to the Oluk Bridge, a stone Roman bridge that spans the narrowest part of the gorge.

Evening: Final Dinner in the Port

Return to Antalya for a final meal. If you haven't tried "Piyaz" (a local bean salad with tahini) or "Laba" (stuffed ribs), look for a traditional lokanta (tradesman restaurant) in the Balbey neighborhood. It’s a grounded way to finish a high-energy trip.

Where to stay for 5 days in Antalya

Your choice of neighborhood changes your experience. Antalya is a large city, and traffic can be heavy.

  • Kaleiçi (The Old City): Best for couples and history enthusiasts. Stay in a converted Ottoman mansion. You will be within walking distance of the best bars and historical sites. It is atmospheric but can be noisy at night.
  • Lara: Best for families and those who want luxury. This is where the large "all-inclusive" resorts are located. It has sandy beaches and is closer to the airport.
  • Konyaaltı: Best for digital nomads and long-stay travelers. It feels like a real neighborhood with modern apartments, great gyms, and a long pebble beach. It offers the best balance of city life and coastal relaxation.
  • Belek: Stay here if you are in Antalya for golf. It is about 30 minutes outside the city and consists almost entirely of high-end golf resorts and manicured greens.

Five days in Antalya allows you to move beyond the "resort bubble." You get the history of the Roman empire, the ruggedness of the Taurus mountains, and the modern pulse of Turkey's fastest-growing coastal city.
